4 Ways Your Commercial Building May Be Wasting Energy

Owning a commercial property involves much responsibility. One of those responsibilities is keeping utility costs down. There are several ways you can save on your monthly electric or gas bills. At Bryan & Bryan Inspections, we recommend avoiding these four energy-wasting habits to ensure your property is saving on energy and your bottom line.

1. Keeping Lights On 24/7

This is something we do all the time, whether we’re at home or at work. We think nothing of leaving the lights on until we get our utility bill. Since it can be difficult to remember to turn lamps and overhead lights off, there are a few things you can do to save on this type of energy like installing motion detectors or time-controlled lights.

2. Operating Energy-Demanding Equipment

There is a ton of energy being used when you leave office equipment plugged in or consistently running. You can save energy by making sure all computers, laptops, and printers are turned off at the end of the workday. Do the same thing for industrial machines like copiers and shredders.

3. Using Older HVAC Appliances

For commercial properties that use HVAC units and appliances, older equipment will use much more energy than newer equipment. Most, if not all, new HVAC appliances are now built to be energy-efficient. This means they can cool down or heat up your building faster, using less energy in the process.

4. Ignoring Energy Loss

If you have energy-efficient HVAC units and your commercial building is not staying warm or cool as it should be, you may be dealing with energy loss. Energy can seep through small cracks in the ceilings, holes in the floor, or non-insulated walls. An energy audit is an assessment of the energy that flows through your building and it can give you a better understanding of how energy is being used as well as where energy is being wasted.
